‘The Torch-Bearers’ plays up the laughs  Aug 5, 2009
The point was proven again by Michael Frayn s Noises Off and Christopher Guest s 1996 film Waiting for Guffman. George Kelly s 1922 light comedy The Torch-Bearers, a Broadway hit in its day that is now being revived at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, is in this delicious line of plays and films that take as their premise the notion that people are never so much themselves as when they are acting, or trying to. Taking mockery to new heights  Jul 5, 2009
Not that today's audiences have gained immunity through extended exposure, despite Christopher Guest's films ("Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show," etc ... One of its stars, Christopher Guest, went on to refine the improvised art of the faux-doc with "Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind." Monty Python sprinkled plenty of fake news stories in its Flying Circus, then Eric Idle spearheaded the Beatles parody "The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash.". (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

Shearer is rumoured to earn $US400,000 ($500,000) an episode providing the voices of Mr Burns, Ned Flanders and others on The Simpsons and hosts a hugely popular satirical radio program, Le Show: it is that, not Spinal Tap or The Simpsons, that has earned him a star on Hollywood Boulevard. Return Of Spinal Tap  Apr 19, 2009
After 25 years of touring on and off as the musical characters they portrayed in films such as "This Is Spinal Tap," "Waiting for Guffman" and "A Mighty Wind," the trio is dropping the act for its Unwigged and Unplugged tour, appearing onstage as themselves and playing quieter versions of their cult hits. Guest called us from Los Angeles to tell us what to expect (Hint: There won't be any exploding drummers) when they take the stage Wednesday at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. 25 years later  Apr 15, 2009
That means in addition to Tap faves Hell Hole and Sex Farm, concertgoers will hear Folksmen tunes from A Mighty Wind, A Penny for Your Thoughts from Waiting for Guffman, Shearer's All Backed Up from his 2007 album Songs Pointed & Pointless, plus surprises and occasional guests. In some cities, McKean will be joined by wife Annette O'Toole on their co-written A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow. (USA Today)

This is so not Spinal Tap  Apr 12, 2009
Instead, the actors who made them famous - Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer - will appear as themselves, performing acoustic versions of Spinal Tap songs, as well as music from the Guest-directed movies, folk-music spoof A Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman (a similar stab at small-town amateur dramatics). It's important to get the message out, Guest insists by phone from Los Angeles: "Otherwise, the panic is that the audience will be all 16-year-old boys in black T-shirts wondering what... Q & A with 'mockumentary' man Michael Hitchcock  Mar 21, 2009
Guest fans will know him best as the chipper, "Busy Bee"-shouting husband of Parker Posey in "Best in Show," or the local councilman with a crush on Guest's character in "Waiting for Guffman," or the "Hate It" film critic in today's screening of "For Your Consideration." ... And so we had kind of a lengthy talk, mostly about community theater, because at the time, he was preparing to do "Waiting for Guffman," which is about community theater ... And I did community theater as a kid, growing up... (Athens Banner-Herald)

Starz's oddball comedies make a wacky pair  Mar 20, 2009
They're like TV-size versions of the Christopher Guest movies "Waiting for Guffman" and "A Mighty Wind," where the actors are clearly feeling loose and playful. The vibe is kiddie sandbox, not prison work yard. (Boston Globe)

Film festival enters fifth year (with VIDEO)  Mar 15, 2009
"Fred was a guest of Robert's here in 2007," says Kohn of Willard, the gifted comedic actor who has appeared in such gems as "Wall-E," "This is Spinal Tap," "Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show" and - as part of this year's festival - "For Your Consideration.". Although the Osborne festival has received national recognition for its past programs and guests, this year's movie lineup is perhaps the best in the event's short history. (Athens Banner-Herald)
