Soon Dali would leave Lorca and Spain to work and collaborate with Buuel, including "Un Chien Andalou," Buuel's legendary Surrealist short, whose close-up of a woman's eye as it is sliced by a razor shocked more than 80 years ago (and the few seconds used here earned the film "a brief disturbing image" warning from the MPAA). Thanks to director of photography Adam Suschitzky, "Little Ashes" is beautifully spare in its look, and the pacing has a sort of decadent languor to it, opposites that in... Little Ashes" is without question the only movie in the entire history of the medium whose potential audience includes both teenage mall-chicks and devotees of 1920s Spanish surrealism. Since that's an awfully small piece of the Venn diagram, we may as well throw in lovers of bad cinema.
