'Whip It' utterly entertaining  Oct 9, 2009
" (Courtesy Darren Michaels/MCT)ENTER MOVIE-WHIPIT 4 FT By Rene Rodriguez McClatchy Newspapers October 09, 2009 2:00 AM The kind of movie that makes the term "formulaic crowd-pleaser" seem like a good thing, "Whip It" is completely predictable from the first frame. It also is ridiculously, utterly entertaining.Drew Barrymore's smashing directorial debut harkens back to an era in which Hollywood studio pictures could still move and enthrall the audience while plying in hoary cliches. Although the... (Seacoast New Hampshire)

Lace up your skates and go see 'Whip It'  Oct 3, 2009
Although the setting of "Whip It" is fresh territory for movies - the independent women's roller-derby circuit - pretty much everything that happens in the film can be traced back to other pictures, from "The Karate Kid" and "The Bad News Bears" to "Saturday Night Fever.". That comparison may sound like a dreary mishmash, but Barrymore, working from a screenplay by Shauna Cross (who adapted her novel, "Derby Girl"), has crafted a spirited and ingratiating coming-of-age tale by focusing on the... Bonds' offensive skills at the end were in decline as he marched toward the home run record, and his defensive liabilities make the Bad News Bears look like Gold Glovers. And it's been what, almost three years since he faced major league pitching. (Hanford Sentinal, CA)

I'm sure there were times when they seriously wondered if any real good would ever come from this rural version of the Bad News Bears. BUT 46 YEARS have passed and one has to wonder whatever happened to the 1963 Forest Everreadies and the efforts of their leaders. (Forest City Summit, IO)

The teams want to play (a tourney)/ Everybody in the stadium wants the kids to be able to play (the tournament). Only the fools in charge are stubbornly chasing children around a field, trying to enforce a stupid rule that everybody hates. A 16 team tournament only takes 4 weeks and 15 games.Let them play! ". 'Eastbound and Down'  Feb 13, 2009
Prodigal-son stories have been knocking them dead for a couple of thousand years now, and the tale of the messy failure redeemed by contact with ordinary folks and small children has been with us at least since the first version of "The Bad News Bears." It remains to be seen just how redeemed Kenny will be, but it won't take much to make him seem improved. I can't say the pilot struck me as especially funny, but there are good things and talented people in it, and it looks good. (Los Angeles Times)

It reminded me of the movie the Bad News Bears when in the beginning of their quest they would make mistakes and argue with each other and blame. By the end of the movie they were working as a team. (Orangeburg Times and Democrat, SC)
