The man who sold the war Nov 7, 2009
You know, I look at this case, and I say so in the introduction or the author's note, that this is a "Rashomon" kind of case. "Rashomon" was, you know, a Kurosawa film about a murder, in which the version you get as the viewer is from the four people involved in it, and you get violently different versions of events. Brian Mackey: Weighing the worth of movies watched Jul 24, 2009
It raises a question peculiar to the Netflix age: Is life too short for Rashomon ... For me, the all-time record for an unwatched movie was Rashomon, which Netflix says I had from July 2008 through December 2008 ... Rashomon cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa, for example, re-established the limit of what was possible in his craft by pointing his camera at the sun and creating long tracking shots through the woods. LONG ROAD TO LYNCHIAN CAMP Jun 26, 2009
Much debate about who might be telling the truth suggests the aim is a grindhouse "Rashomon.". Entirely gratuitous violence, a masked freak, a chuckling maniac, girl-on-girl action and screamingly bizarre dialogue ("Bring the butter! We're gonna have toast!") amp up the camp factor in a second film from the woman who gave us the 1993 cinematic anti-legend "Boxing Helena.0004000 t; Unlike Lynch's father's latest, "Inland Empire," this one isn't a bore. It may enjoy a life in the after-midnight... (New York Post -- Entertainment)
David Lynch Thriller SURVEILLANCE to Premiere as a Sneak Preview on HDNet Movies Jun 16, 2009
Critics are raving about SURVEILLANCE. Richard Corliss of TIME says, "Think Rashomon meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in Twin Peaks ... and you may get on the warped wavelength of this semi-comic parable of social anarchy." Aaron Hillis of VILLAGE VOICE calls SURVEILLANCE, "Deliciously demented." And Geoff Berkshire of METROMIX says "Solid genre thrills with plenty of dark humor. Lynch has clearly learned from her father's knack for crafting eerily unsettling movies.". It's been a hell of a day... (Yahoo! Wire -- Entertainment News)

It's become a phenomenon in Japan, and was the surprise winner of the Academy Award for best foreign language film in February - the first Japanese film to win the Oscar since three films, including Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon," won honorary Oscars in the 1950s. It's about a young Tokyo man, Daigo (Masahiro Motoki), who loses his job as a cellist when his orchestra disbands amid the economic downturn. (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)
DVD Report: This week's new releases (March 1) Mar 1, 2009
"The Outrage" (1964) reunites Newman with "Hud" director Martin Ritt for a westernization of Akira Kurosawa's multi-perspective "Rashomon." Perplexingly but divertingly, Newman hams it up as a sneering Mexican bandit - "stupid gringos!" - involved in the assault of a dignified traveling couple. The black-and-white cinematography keeps those famed baby blues from being a suspension-of-disbelief issue, at least. (Boston Globe)
‘Vantage Point' Good looking (2) Feb 15, 2009
Several movie critics, probably because they saw Rashomon at an early, impressionable age, slammed Vantage Point because of its car-chase ending, which reveals what actually happened. The Akira Kurosawa-directed Rashomon left the truth to be changing and perhaps unknowable, which was philosophically fascinating in 1950 and beside the point in 2008. (Desert Entertainer, CA)
