Any excuse for writing about Martin Balsam is a good one, and today's excuse is that "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" is in movie theaters ... I think what made it easy for Balsam to be overlooked a generation ago is that there were so many Martin Balsam types running around in those days, not in the movies, but in daily life.
