The Limits Of Control  Jul 23, 2009
In talking about his inspiration for the film, Jarmusch has helpfully provided a catalogue of influences - John Boorman's Point Blank, Jean-Pierre Melville's famously cryptic Le Samourai and Italian director Francesco Rosi's political thrillers of the 1970s. For the film's title he has mined an essay by William Burroughs while neglecting to make it connect with anything else that appears on screen. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

Review: 'Public Enemies'  Jul 2, 2009
There is a formal, almost existential quality about his fatalistic portrayal of the scourge of the Midwest, more "Le Samourai" than "White Heat," more Alain Delon cool than Cagney hot. It's almost as if Depp, who lives in France, and his French costar Marion Cotillard have unconsciously collaborated with Mann to channel the spirit of the classic French gangster director Jean-Pierre Melville into these decidedly American proceedings.
