I say it's with her Oscar-winning turns in "Sophie's Choice" and "Kramer vs. Kramer," especially for Streep fans who prefer her earlier work. Hoffman has been a Hollywood icon for more than 40 years, a Hall of Fame caliber character actor who created indelible roles in "The Graduate," "Midnight Cowboy," "Tootsie," "Kramer vs. Kramer," "Rain Main" and many other films. Letters to Sunday Datebook  Mar 16, 2009
I attribute it to what has often happened when a movie captures the fancy of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences beyond what it should; perhaps the academy was "rewarding" Dustin Hoffman for 1967's "The Graduate" by giving him the best actor Oscar for "Kramer vs. Kramer" in 1980. That's typical of what the academy has done many times. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Last Chance Harvey  Mar 2, 2009
Tellingly, it wasn't until Hoffman tackled the relatively "normal" role of a contemporary father in Robert Benton's 1979 drama Kramer vs. Kramer that he won his first Oscar; the second, of course, came for his more familiarly eccentric and altogether extraordinary role: Raymond Babbitt in Levinson's 1988 drama Rain Man. There are echoes of many of these on-screen creations in Hoffman's Harvey Shine. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)
