I attribute it to what has often happened when a movie captures the fancy of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences beyond what it should; perhaps the academy was "rewarding" Dustin Hoffman for 1967's "The Graduate" by giving him the best actor Oscar for "Kramer vs. Kramer" in 1980.
