ANDERSON'S WINDOW: My undying love for zombies  Nov 1, 2009
In 1978, Romero released "Dawn of the Dead," a full-color, no-holds-barred gore fest where zombies swarmed outside a suburban shopping mall while survivors holed up inside ... There are pale imitations ("Return of the Living Dead") and remakes (both "Night" and "Dawn of the Dead"). (Scituate Mariner, MA)

Zombie Films - An Alternative Renta...  Oct 27, 2009
When George A. Romero's seminal film Dawn Of The Dead was seen in Italy, it was in an altered cut (masterminded by Dario Argento) known as Zombi. Yet while Romero went on to make his own threequel (1985's Day Of The Dead), gorehound and talented visualist Lucio Fulci helmed a more obscure Italian cash-in. (Suite101.com)

MOVIE BLOG: Zombies make for good comedy material  Oct 21, 2009
While we still have plenty of zombie and zombie-esque movies that aim to fill us with dread (see 28 Days Later, Resident Evil and Dawn of the Dead), were getting more and more comedies that use the unbelievable zombie stories to their advantage. Granted, there have always been the B zombie movies, where you laughed more often than you screamed, its still notable that movies like Shaun of the Dead and books like Pride, Prejudice and Zombies and The Zombie... @ The Movies: Halloween Flick Picks  Oct 2, 2009
"Dawn of the Dead" (2004): Sure, the recent remakes of horror maestro George A. Romero's "Dead" films have maintained the filmmaking legend's artistic integrity, and there's no really no beating his original. However, the remake of the second in Romero's "Dead" trilogy -- "Dawn of the Dead" -- comes close. (KERO 23, CA)

Zombieland Film Review  Oct 2, 2009
Ruben Fleischer s Directorial Debut As Effective As Zack Snyder s Dawn of the Dead (2004). Zombieland s setpieces take place on backwoods or local roads leading to small-town grocery stores, chintzy tourist traps, the aforementioned rundown fun park and, at one point, a vast mansion. (Suite101.com)

'Zombieland' nearly scared off Woody Harrelson  Oct 2, 2009
From "Dawn of the Dead" wringing pointed satire from connecting zombies to mall culture to Peter Jackson's hilariously over-the-top extravaganza of blood, guts and squishiness "Dead Alive," and recently the comedy-first, carnage-second ethos of the beloved British sendup "Shaun of the Dead," something about tearing into a zombie story easily exposes a funny bone ... Or should zombies sprint like jacked-up relay racers, as in Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" and Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead"... (FOX59, IN)

    'Zombieland'  Oct 2, 2009
Fleischer considers it "Midnight Run" with zombies and it's closer to "Shaun of the Dead" than "Dawn of the Dead," but there's an undertow about living in social isolation and the peril and pleasure of friendships and makeshift families. The writing is witty -- taking full advantage of a celebrity in a small role and dropping in current references such as "Facebook status updates" -- the comic chemistry strong and the pacing brisk. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)

Zombie Physics: How to Avoid the Shambling Undead  Sep 30, 2009
Though the paper itself does not specifically refer to fleeing from zombies, it describes "the survival probability of immobile targets annihilated by random walkers." The conclusions suggest that the people trapped in a mall in "Dawn of the Dead" may be better off than the folks stuck in a farmhouse in "Night of the Living Dead.". Cassi found that the likelihood of survival when threatened by predatory random walkers is closely related to how complex the prey s hideout is. (Fox News)

    They're stayin' alive  Sep 20, 2009
He played the Machete Zombie in George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead." ... It was 3 a.m., and he was a lowly grip on the "Dawn of the Dead" movie set who'd asked for a bit part on a whim ... Sunday's best  Sep 3, 2009
I'd often see people just wandering round the empty town centre - it was just like the scene from Dawn of The Dead ... The shop was in the town centre and when I was walking to work I'd often see people just wandering round the empty town centre - it was just like the scene from Dawn of The Dead with the zombies wandering round the Mall. Collapse of civilization, with every human infected or dead  Aug 20, 2009
Taking the characteristics of zombies as described in such noted scholarly works as George Romero s Night of the Living Dead and the 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead, they have plotted the likely course of a zombie outbreak in which the zombie infection is spread by bites, and in which zombies feed on dead human flesh ... Uhh, Dawn of the Dead already happened. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- Opinion)

    Deadliest Diseases  Jul 10, 2009
Although not technically a zombie film (the diseased are still alive), the movie was heavily influenced by George Romero's by-then trilogy of the Dead, and therefore contributed, alongside and Dawn of the Dead, to the recent mainstream success of the living dead ... Walking in Boyle's footsteps, writer James Gunn and director Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of Romero's 1978 cult film Dawn of the Dead brought many new elements to the concept, including the idea that the living dead are the result of an... Batman 3 Directors  Jun 27, 2009
Snyder will also have to remind audiences that before he was playing in the big sandbox, he made a little movie like the Dawn of the Dead remake that juggled character and popcorn entertainment arguably better than his most recent efforts. Assuming Snyder can still tap his former, less gimmicky sensibilities, and put the story front and center, he may just find his name etched on the back of the sequel's director's chair. Weird Chronicles ... And Zombies  Jun 18, 2009
There were a few good ones, and of course Romero returned to again redefine the genre a decade after his first effort with "Dawn of the Dead," which not only had Mom, Dad and Uncle Carl slavering after our brains, they were doing it at the mall, of all places. That newly minted temple to suburban capitalist fervor was overrun with flesh-feasting zombies in a nearly Marxist overthrow of materialist principles. (KFOXTV.com, TX)

Horror Movies That Should Get Remad...  Jun 6, 2009
Most of the time (Amityville Horror, Black Christmas) they are wrong, but once in a while (The Thing, Dawn of the Dead 2004) a new masterpiece emerges. Some classic horror movies have become stale and dated and could probably use a good sprucing up. (Suite101.com)

Can 3-D save the movie industry?  May 28, 2009
"Disney's A Christmas Carol," directed by Robert Zemeckis, will show up around holiday time, and newly revamped 3-D versions of "Titanic," "Dawn of the Dead" and "Toy Story" are rumored to be in the works. But no matter how much 3-D proponents try to amp up excitement for these projects, nobody can yet answer the essential question: What's the difference between a gimmick and a revolution. (Salon)

Drag Me to Hell is a dark-hearted delight  May 27, 2009

Left 4 Dead GOTY Review  May 22, 2009
Left 4 Dead is a game that venerates zombie movies throughout the ages, from George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead to Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. In the game, you and up to three other survivors must battle a zombie apocalypse with a simple goal; you aren't trying to eradicate the undead horde, you're just trying to survive. (IGN PC Games)

'My Bloody Valentine' delivers in 3-D(with 'CINEMA FILE' PODCAST)  May 21, 2009
Following the success of Zack Snyder's 2003 remake of the George Romero zombie classic "Dawn Of The Dead," the past six years have produced numerous remakes of countless fright flicks, mirroring the well-known 1980s trend of endless horror movie sequels. Some have been good (I'm one of the few supporters of the Michael Bay-produced "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" redux), some have been bad (check The Cinema File archives for my take on "Last House On The Left"), but only "My Bloody Valentine 3-D"... Six reasons why we love zombies  Mar 19, 2009
Dawn of the Dead left an indelible mark on the movie-going masses in 1978 thanks in part to the way it used the undead as a metaphor for the living. Set in a shopping mall, the movie made a wry statement about our insatiable hunger for stuff, showing throngs of zombies tottering about the sprawling shopping center as though trapped in an all-too-familiar haze of mindless consumerism. (MSNBC -- Technology)

Gory 'Dead Rising' remake is fun but flawed  Mar 13, 2009
With its copious amounts of blood and decapitations, Chop Till You Drop is as gory as a B horror movie such as "Dawn of the Dead," which also takes place in a shopping mall. While the game is clearly rooted in fiction (it is about zombies, after all), some parents might take offense at a mall-based killing spree and now with more realistic controls. (USA Today -- Tech)

    Lewis: The ACTION 5!  Mar 12, 2009
I would not argue with that assessment - but that doesn't mean that director Zack Snyder (of the surprisingly fantastic "Dawn of the Dead" remake, and the almost-as-awesome "300") didn't do an admirable job of trying. At 2 hours and 43 minutes, "Watchmen" might seem long to the uninitiated, but truth be told, it wasn't near long enough to be a true success. (Athens Banner-Herald)

Reviewer annoyed by 'Watchmen'  Mar 9, 2009
Snyder -- whose previous films were a remake ("Dawn of the Dead") and another scrupulously faithful comic book adaptation ("300") -- is more in the line of a fancy photocopier, duplicating other artists' imagery with a forger's intensity. A visionary transforms the world. (CNN)

When graphic goes epic  Mar 7, 2009
" That said, Snyder who also did the Dawn of the Dead remake and 300, which went supernova, while making Watchmen kept faith in the material. He kept getting notes from studio suits to shorten the film and tone down the adult content, but Snyder ignored them. How did he win those arguments? Did 300's $700 million take help? "Strangely, I think it was more that they liked the movie. " Snyder says, laughing again. "They found themselves in the same moral dilemma that I did. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

    "Watchmen"  Mar 6, 2009
" I'm shocked to be writing this, given the number of screenwriters, directors and studios this adaptation of and Dave Gibbons' ground-breaking 1986 anti-superhero comic series has gone through, but "Watchmen" is absolutely devastating. Dense, intense, tragic and visionary, this is the kind of movie that keeps setting off bombs in your brain hours after you've seen it. After coming out of the theater, I wandered the frozen streets of Manhattan watching passersby and wondering which was the real... (Salon)

Big day about to dawn for 'Watchmen'  Mar 6, 2009
Praising director Zack Snyder, whose resume includes the highly successful "300" and "Dawn of the Dead," Akerman said the film will make fans proud. "This is just sort of a huge feat for Zack to take on. But him being a true fan, he came in with the mind of these fanboys and really kept that in mind and I think that he did a great job," she said. (CNN)

Watchmen Soundtrack and Original Score Released Today, March 3rd, on Warner Sunset/Reprise Records  Mar 4, 2009
Tyler, who also scored the Snyder-directed films 300 and Dawn of the Dead, has also scored the soundtracks to The Day the Earth Stood Still, Showtime's Californication, Slither, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and The Devil's Rejects. He is known for his surprising juxtapositions of music styles and flair for delicate, atmospheric touches, as well as stressing emotional vibrancy over traditional formulas of music compositions. (Yahoo! Wire -- Entertainment News)

Newsweek: 'Watchmen' is too loyal to the graphic novel  Mar 3, 2009
Snyder, 43, has made only two previous films, and one of them was a remake of "Dawn of the Dead." Calling him a visionary based on "300"with its numbingly repetitive, CGI arterial spraysand a zombie flick paints a big fat target on his forehead for people like me. And "Watchmen's" failure hinges precisely on the fault line between a wildly proficient directorwhich Snyder isand a visionary. (MSNBC -- News)

Bringing to light the dark world of 'Watchmen'  Mar 1, 2009
"Snyder landed the "Watchmen" job largely because of his experience with managing and meeting fan expectations of his 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead" and, more recently, "300," which was also adapted from comics. Sometimes his approach to "Watchmen" ran counter to studio thinking: He pushed for a screenplay that kept the story's Cold War backdrop rather than pursuing an inherited script's war-on-terror update. When it was determined that the movie's 160-minute running time couldn't accommodate... (Boston Globe)

Will anyone watch the 'Watchmen'?  Feb 27, 2009
At that point, the director had only done stylish TV commercials and the 2003 zombie remake "Dawn of the Dead." But he was also deep in the middle of shooting the studio's action epic "300," another adaptation of a brilliantly brutal comic, and the execs liked what they were seeing. Snyder's approach was simple: He would remain religiously faithful to the comic. (CNN -- Showbiz)

Sometimes remakes conquer dated originals  Feb 26, 2009
There have been horror remakes that tried to take a new angle on an old story, like Rob Zombie s Halloween, which tried to explore the origins of the Michael Myers character, or the updated Dawn of the Dead, which re-imagined George Romero s original story in a faster-paced, more exciting style. If you ve got something new to say, I have no issue with taking another stab (pun intended) at an old story. (Chippewa Falls Chippewa Herald, WI)

The Omen and the Amityville Horror  Feb 26, 2009
"Dawn of the Dead" suggested suburban consumerismwas turning Americans into mindless shopping zombies trolling suburban malls. "Amityville," however, is allegedly based on a true story, and the film used the book written by the real-life Lutz family, who said they lived in a haunted Amityville home. (Suite101.com)

    It's 'Watchmen' time  Feb 26, 2009
"It's the most political of the three movies I've made," acknowledges Snyder, whose first feature was the 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead.". "Watchmen" is set in an alternate America where Richard Nixon is in his fifth term, superheroes who have lost the support of the public have been outlawed and the country is locked in a potentially catastrophic nuclear standoff with the Soviet Union. (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

All eyes are on Zack Snyder as 'Watchmen' premiere nears  Feb 25, 2009
If anything, he courts the doubters who have been hounding him since he made the jump from television commercials to feature films five years ago to remake George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. "I actually got death threats for doing Dawn," he says after the presentation, which ended in wild applause from fans who showed up as much to see the director as the footage. (USA Today -- Life)

Retroview: Resident Evil  Feb 21, 2009
Apparently George Romero (of Dawn of the Dead fame) was hired to pen the script for the original film, but his script was rejected because it strayed from the themes and story of the video game series, and the producers eventually went with Anderson's for his past experience in adapting video games into films. The films have been commercially successful, and have also received the stamp of approval from film critics as well as fans of the video game franchise. (Express Buzz)

A director of two films is suddenly a 'visionary' by his third  Feb 16, 2009
The first was "Dawn of the Dead," a 2004 remake of the 1978 film about flesh-eating zombies in a mall. It sold a respectable $59 million in tickets at theaters. (International Herald Tribune -- Business)

Superheros with issues: Watchmen make it onscreen  Feb 8, 2009
In 2004 he had scored a hit with his remake of the George A. Romero zombie movie "Dawn of the Dead" and was at work on an unheralded action movie called "300," a violent adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel about the ancient battle of Thermopylae. (Snyder's office on the Warner Brothers lot is decorated with a lion-skin rug, a cast of a saber-toothed tiger skull and a candle shaped like a human cranium. (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

Why horror sequels wear out their welcome  Feb 7, 2009
In fact, thanks to stuff like the shocking and surprisingly awesome Dawn of the Dead remake and the new 3D version of My Bloody Valentine (a film with no agenda except to throw lots of blood and guts at your face, provided your glasses are on), I cant even say I hate the concept of the remake on principle anymore. Those two, all by themselves, can help me forget that I paid money to see the reboots of When a Stranger Calls, Black Christmas and Prom Night. (MSNBC -- Movies)
