    'Whatever Works'  Jul 3, 2009
As profundities go, that doesn't rank up there with "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Nor does this 40th Woody Allen film rank up there with the likes of "Annie Hall" or "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." But even middlin'-quality Allen is more entertaining and mentally engaging than three-fourths of what passes for comedy on today's screen. The script of "Whatever Works" was written more than 30 years ago for the late great Zero Mostel, who departed in 1977. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)

Newsweek: The roots of the New York neurotic  Jun 20, 2009
What was most radical about Annie Hall in 1977 wasn't just that a nebbishy, brainy and self-doubting Jew could be the star of a romantic comedy but that he could get the beautiful WASP girl. Twenty and 30 years later, Woody was still getting the girl; as he grew older, though, the girl didn't. (MSNBC -- News)

'Whatever Works': Grumposaurus Rex, By Kurt Loder  Jun 20, 2009
Allen wrote the script more than 30 years ago, when he was making such incomparable films as "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan." Back then, his nebbish hostility had the fresh zing of underdog humor. Now he's wealthy and celebrated and 73 years old, and that youthful comic stance, transported into the present, just seems crabby and sour. (VHI.com -- Music News)

no First Amendment defense in Woody Allen v. American Apparel  Jun 18, 2009
He had alleged that American Apparel's billboard advertising campaign featuring a still photo of him dressed as a Hasidic Jew from the film Annie Hall" was a blatant misappropriation of his image. Neither side said much at the time about why they had settled the case, but U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Griesa's rulings at a pretrial hearing May 11 - in which he said American Apparel's liability was "very clear" -- provide much of the missing context.American Apparel's defense against... Allen's film, 'Whatever Works,' ideal for David  Jun 17, 2009
"Whatever Works" is funny, philosophical and New York-centric -- more in line with Allen's films in the '70s and '80s, when he was hitting his stride with films like "Annie Hall" and "Hannah and Her Sisters.". Neither David or Allen, though, consider Boris an alter ego of Allen. (Erie Times-News, PA)

Off the Rails  Jun 16, 2009
This was a beautiful trick when deployed in Annie Hall in a schoolroom, at the movies, during lunch with Annie s family but those monologues were cut short as other voices intruded, eliding the narcissism of the hero and forcing him to join a crowded world. Boris, by contrast, is allowed to rant at leisure, barely drawing a laugh, and we are left with the sense of a locked-in soul a proud one, too, as if he alone (plus, by implication, the director) were witness to an inarguable truth. (New Yorker)

Best actress: Why doesn't Hollywood care?  May 21, 2009
Because the next time a best actress appeared in a best picture wasnt until 1977: Diane Keaton for Annie Hall. Kobe Being Kobe  May 16, 2009
"What's fascinating," Allen says of the sport in Annie Hall, "is that it's physical. You know, it's one thing about intellectuals, they prove that you can be absolutely brilliant and have no idea what's going on. But on the other hand ... the body doesn't lie.". Lee's Kobe Doin' Work (ESPN, Saturday at 8 p.m. ET) supposes that film tells the truth 24 times a second, the game 12 minutes per quarter, the body every moment of life. (Slate)

Woody Allen Headed to Trial Against American Apparel in the Case of the Purloined Image  May 16, 2009
Allen filed last year, after the company ran online and billboard ads featuring photos of the famed actor and director dressed as an orthodox Jew from his 1977 movie, "Annie Hall." The billboards, which were up in New York and Los Angeles for less than a week, included Yiddish script and American Apparel's name. Character actors hold films togethe...  Mar 5, 2009
Christopher Walken started out as a supporting player in the late 1970s in films like Annie Hall and The Deer Hunter, became a lead in the early 80s, then acquired the most fame, some would argue cult status, as the go-to character actor when a producer sought a crime lord or other low-life. Vicky Cristina Barcelona occupies the upper reaches of his output: not quite as good as Annie Hall, but far friendlier than the depressing films he did when he was attempting to imitate Ingmar Berg-man while pondering death and depression.
